Kilbree Junior A hurlers contested the South West Junior A hurling league final last Saturday evening when they played Diarmuid O’Mathunas in Ballincarriga. An even first half saw Kilbree leading by a narrow two point margin at half time on a 0-7 to 0-5. On the resumption Diarmuid O’Mathunas quickly drew level before crucially in the 40th minute they scored the only goal of the game to put them into a 3 point lead. At this stage a number of missed scoring opportunities allied to some excellent goal keeping from the opposition keeper prevented Kilbree from adding to their score. Both sides exchanged a series of points in the final quarter where at the final whistle Diarmuid O’Mathunas emerged victorious on a 1-13 to 0-10 score line.

Kilbree U.12 hurlers played their replayed U.12 hurling first round championship game against Carbery Rangers in the past week. In an extremely low scoring encounter Kilbree were defeated by 1-1 to 0-1. On last Saturday morning in Rossmore the club held a very successful U.8 & U.10 football blitz. Castlehaven, Pedlars Cross and Timoleague along with the host club took part in what was a most enjoyable morning’s activity for all concern.

Kilbree U.14 hurlers played Sliabh Rua last Saturday evening in Riverstick in an U.14 hurling challenge. Despite being defeated this game was a worthwhile exercise ahead of their upcoming league semi final against Aghabullogue.

On Friday evening last at the Sam McGuire festival celebration in Dunmanway members of the U.8, U.10, U.12 & U.14 teams took part in a parade to mark the 125 anniversary of the founding of the GAA. Kilbree U.21 hurlers qualified for the U.21 B hurling final in the past week when they had a narrow two point victory over near neighbours Clonakilty. This game was played in Ardfield on Tuesday evening of last week. In the opening half Kilbree were reliant on the accuracy of Dylan Coffey from frees where at half time Kilbree led by a point. In the second half both sides exchanged goals, the Kilbree goal coming from Senan Kemp. In the end Kilbree survived a late Clonakilty onslaught to qualify for a final date against Dohenys on a final score of 1-11 to 1-9.

Kilmeen minor footballers played their championship quarter final replay against Ahan Gaels on Sunday morning last. This game was played under torrential weather conditions in Ardfield. Kilmeen, with the aid of the strong wind, started brightly and after 15 minutes led by 2-4 to 0-1. Both Kilmeen scored being scored by Darragh Coakley. However from here till half time Ahan Gaels came well into the game and with their midfield pairing completely on top they scored 5 unanswered points to leave the half time score 2-4 to 0-7. In the restart Ahan quickly wiped out the Kilmeen lead before taking the lead with a 48 minute goal.  Both sides exchanged points from here till the finish where at the final whistle; Ahan Gaels were victory by 1-15 to 2-7.

On Monday evening Kilmeen Junior D footballers played the first round of the championship against Dohenys in Rossmore. Once more conditions for this game were horrendous where unfortunately the game was abandoned 12 minutes into the second half due to conditions deteriorating making playing conditions extremely dangerous for the players.

Kilmeen U.8 & u.10 footballers had two recent outings against O’Donovan Rossa and Clonakilty respectively. Kilbree U.12 hurlers played their replayed U.12 hurling championship first round last Monday evening in Ardfield. However after the commencent of the game conditions deteriorated considerably leading the referee with no option but to abandon the game at half time where at the time the sides were level. By the time these notes will appear this game will have been replayed, a report will appear in next week’s edition of this game.

The past week was a relatively quiet week for the club. On Sunday two full bus loads of supporters from the club travelled to Croke Park to support Cork senior footballers in their tremendous victory over Tyrone in the All Ireland Semi final. A most enjoyable day out was had by all.

On Monday evening Kilbree U.12 hurlers played Carbery Rangers in Clonakilty in the first round of the U.12 hurling championship. In an exciting game the sides ended level on a 3-4 apiece score line. The date for the replay has yet to be confirmed. Also during the past week Kilbree U.10 hurlers had an enjoyable outing against Barryroe. For the coming week Kilbree U.8 & U.10 hurlers will play Pedlars Cross in Rossmore on Thursday evening and on the same night Kilmeen U.16 footballers will play Castlehaven away at 7.00pm.

In adult level the only game played during the past week was a junior D football league game against Randal Og on Saturday evening in Rossmore. In a low scoring encounter Kilmeen emerged victorious by 3 points on a 1-7 to 1-4 score line. This victory should see Kilmeen qualify for the latter stages of this competition. The same side are provisionally set to play the first round of the championship against Dohenys over the coming weekend. The U.21 hurling semi final against Clonakilty may also go ahead at the beginning of next week however no definite date has been finalised for this fixture.
